Heathrow Airport says a new survey shows significant local backing for its proposed third runway, with 68% of residents living around the airport supporting expansion plans.
The poll, conducted by Savanta among more than 9,000 people, found the highest level of support in Slough, where 82% of respondents backed the project. Support was largely driven by expectations of job creation and economic growth, with 77% citing employment opportunities and 50% highlighting benefits for the local economy.
The findings add to existing support from major trade unions, including Unite the Union, Community and GMB, as well as business organisations such as the British Chambers of Commerce, Confederation of British Industry, Federation of Small Businesses and Make UK.
Heathrow said the results reflect more than a decade of consultation with local communities and reinforce the case for a privately financed expansion project. The airport argues that a third runway would deliver substantial economic benefits, improve connectivity and create long-term employment opportunities across West London and the wider UK.
The survey results are likely to strengthen Heathrow’s efforts to secure government approval for the long-debated expansion project, which the airport says is ready to move forward.
