London Heathrow sets new passenger and cargo records in 2025

London Heathrow Airport closed 2025 with its strongest performance on record, welcoming more than 84 million passengers for the first time in its history and recording its busiest-ever December with nearly 7.2 million travellers.

The year featured several milestones, including the airport’s busiest single day on 1 August, when more than 270,000 passengers passed through the hub. Heathrow outperformed 2024 traffic levels in nine of the twelve months and retained its position as the world’s most connected hub airport.

Operational performance also improved significantly. In December, Heathrow was Europe’s most punctual hub airport, with over 97% of passengers waiting less than five minutes at security. Baggage handling reliability rose to a load rate above 98% in 2025, placing around 250,000 more bags on their intended flights compared with the previous year.

Cargo volumes remained strong, with 138,000 tonnes handled in December alone. The airport recorded its three highest cargo days of 2025 on 6, 14 and 20 December, while total cargo volumes increased by 12,600 tonnes year on year, reinforcing Heathrow’s status as the UK’s largest port by value.

Retail activity also surged during the festive season, with an item sold at World Duty Free every 5.5 seconds.

Looking ahead, Heathrow plans to invest more than £1.3 billion in 2026 to further enhance customer experience and service quality. Chief Executive Thomas Woldbye said the results demonstrate strong demand and operational resilience, adding that government backing for expansion and a supportive regulatory framework would allow the airport to deliver even greater connectivity, trade and economic growth for the UK.
