Heathrow Airport recorded its busiest February on record, handling 5.8 million passengers, up 1.9% year-on-year, as a busy school half-term period and increased travel linked to Chinese New Year boosted demand.
The increase — about 110,000 more passengers than in February last year — was largely driven by airlines operating larger and fuller aircraft, though overall passenger growth remains below the European average of 4.6%, according to data from Airports Council International Europe, as Heathrow continues to operate close to capacity.
Operational performance remained strong during the month. The airport reported industry-leading punctuality, outperforming other European hubs and London airports, while 98% of passengers cleared security in under five minutes.
Cargo activity also rose, with nearly 130,000 tonnes of freight handled, representing a 4% increase year-on-year. The growth occurred despite fewer dedicated cargo flights, as more freight was carried in the belly-hold capacity of passenger aircraft, reinforcing Heathrow’s role as the UK’s largest trade gateway.
The airport said the figures come amid ongoing debate about expanding capacity. With Heathrow operating at its limits and Istanbul Airport now Europe’s busiest airport, the UK hub argues that expansion is necessary to add routes, increase competition and support economic growth.
Heathrow is also monitoring developments in the Middle East, working with airlines and partners to accommodate additional flight requests and assist passengers affected by disruptions related to the regional conflict.
