Liège Airport reports strong Q1 cargo growth amid volatile market conditions

Share

Liège Airport recorded a solid start to 2026, with cargo volumes and aircraft movements rising sharply in the first quarter, confirming the momentum seen last year despite an uncertain global backdrop.

Between January and March, the airport handled 7,247 aircraft movements, up 7% year-on-year, while cargo volumes climbed 16% to 342,845 tonnes. Growth remained strong in March alone, with movements increasing 9% and tonnage up 11%.

Export activity was a key driver, with outbound volumes rising 20% compared to 2025, supported by sustained demand in e-commerce, perishables, and global logistics flows.

The performance highlights Liège’s continued strength as a major European cargo hub, particularly as global supply chains adjust to ongoing disruptions.

However, the airport warned that the operating environment remains highly volatile. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are reshaping air freight markets, influencing routing, capacity and costs. Rising jet fuel prices, increasing air cargo rates, inflationary pressures and airspace restrictions are all contributing to uncertainty across the sector.

Chief executive Laurent Jossart said the airport remains cautiously optimistic but is preparing for continued instability. While growth is expected to continue, 2026 is likely to be marked by rapid market shifts and challenging conditions, requiring a measured and flexible approach.

Overall, Liège Airport enters the remainder of the year with strong momentum, but under close watch as external pressures could quickly alter demand dynamics.
