Liege Airport posted a strong performance in the first half of 2026, reinforcing its position as one of Europe’s leading air cargo hubs. Cargo aircraft movements increased by 3.3% year-on-year to 14,354, while handled cargo volumes rose by a significantly higher 11.3% to 697,816 tonnes, indicating improved operational efficiency and better aircraft utilisation. Growth moderated during the second quarter, with tonnage increasing 7.5% compared with 15.6% in the first quarter.

Exports were the main driver of growth, rising 19% compared with 6% for imports. Export traffic to Asia increased by 17%, while shipments to North America surged by 51%. During the second quarter, exports continued to outperform, growing 18%, whereas imports remained broadly flat.

According to Vice President Sales & Marketing Frédéric Brun, the results reflect the strength of the airport’s business model, operational efficiency and strategic role in global trade. He highlighted Liege Airport’s modern infrastructure, 24/7 operations and competitive logistics environment as key advantages amid changing global supply chains and continued e-commerce growth.

Looking ahead, the airport cautioned that the new European e-commerce legislation, which came into force on 1 July 2026, could temporarily reduce air cargo volumes by encouraging a shift towards sea freight and more European distribution centres. However, the airport said it is too early to assess the long-term impact and will continue to monitor developments closely.
