Liège Airport is moving ahead with plans to extend its contingency runway as part of a broader infrastructure strategy designed to protect the future growth of one of Europe’s most important air cargo gateways.
The project concerns runway 04L/22R, the airport’s secondary runway, which is set to be lengthened to provide greater operational flexibility and additional resilience during future maintenance periods affecting the main runway. The Walloon airport infrastructure agency SOWAER has launched procurement procedures for the works, marking a key step towards implementation of the project.
Unlike passenger-focused airports where runway projects often aim primarily at increasing capacity, Liège’s investment is closely linked to the specific requirements of a 24-hour cargo operation. The airport handles intensive widebody freight traffic and relies heavily on operational continuity, making runway availability a strategic priority.
The extension of the contingency runway is also closely connected with the future renovation of the main runway 04R/22L. Infrastructure planning documents indicate that the timetable for the main runway rehabilitation may be influenced by the progress of the contingency runway extension project, allowing Liège to maintain operations more effectively when major works eventually take place.
The investment forms part of a wider development strategy aimed at reinforcing Liège Airport’s position as a major European logistics hub. In parallel, SOWAER is continuing to develop economic zones around the airport to support aviation-related activities and logistics growth.
While Charleroi Airport is preparing for a major temporary shutdown in 2028 to rebuild its single runway, Liège is taking a different approach: investing in additional runway capability before carrying out future major rehabilitation works. The objective is clear — maintaining uninterrupted cargo operations while preparing the airport for the next phase of growth.
