Liège Airport introduces river-based kerosene supply to cut emissions and road traffic

Share

Liège Airport has implemented a new river-based kerosene supply system, with fuel transported by barge and docked at Wandre. The initiative is designed to reduce reliance on road tanker deliveries, lowering truck traffic and associated emissions while strengthening fuel supply security.

Although the shift represents a tangible environmental improvement in airport fuel logistics, it does not address the broader climate impact of air transport.

Pipelines remain the most efficient long-term solution for fuel supply, but current infrastructure lacks sufficient capacity. As a result, a multi-pronged approach is required. This includes accelerating the development and uptake of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), advancing technological innovation, expanding multimodal logistics solutions, and maintaining a balanced framework that supports economic activity and employment alongside environmental protection.
