Hundreds of donkeys have been airlifted from war-torn Gaza to animal sanctuaries in France via Liège Airport, in an operation led by Israeli NGO Starting Over Sanctuary. Marketed as a humanitarian mission to rescue neglected animals, the initiative—dubbed the “Donkey Flying Project”—has drawn sharp criticism for being ethically and politically charged.
Critics, including Al Jazeera and Palestinian analysts, accuse Israel of stealing vital working animals from Gaza to hinder reconstruction and restrict civilian mobility, while blocking humanitarian aid to people. The quote “Israel will rescue your donkey, but not your child” has become a flashpoint in the debate.
While Liège Airport confirms its involvement, it claims a neutral role, simply providing transit infrastructure. Animal welfare NGO Gaia questions the sustainability of such evacuations, arguing that animals—and people—should be cared for locally. Since October 2023, around 600 donkeys have been flown out, often in poor condition, according to the organisers.
