Several drones struck Kuwait International Airport on Saturday, damaging part of the airport’s radar infrastructure in an incident that has heightened concerns about aviation security across the Gulf region.
According to Kuwait’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, emergency response teams quickly secured the area after the drones impacted equipment linked to the airport’s air-traffic surveillance systems. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, and operations at the airport were brought under control through established emergency procedures.
Officials said the incident triggered the airport’s contingency response plan, allowing safety teams and technical specialists to assess the damage and ensure that flight operations could continue safely while repairs were initiated.
Investigators are now working to determine the origin of the drones, how they penetrated the airport’s airspace, and the extent of the damage to radar systems used for monitoring aircraft movements in the vicinity of Kuwait City. Authorities have not disclosed how many drones were involved or whether the aircraft were intercepted before or after impact.
The strike comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension across the Middle East, where a growing cycle of missile and drone attacks has targeted infrastructure and military installations in several countries. Kuwait, a key regional transport hub and host to multiple international military facilities, has increased security monitoring in recent weeks as regional instability intensifies.
Aviation analysts note that radar systems are among the most critical components of airport infrastructure, enabling air-traffic controllers to track aircraft and maintain safe separation in busy airspace. Even limited damage to such systems can create operational challenges, though modern airports typically maintain redundant surveillance systems designed to prevent disruptions to flight safety.
Kuwaiti authorities said technical teams are continuing to evaluate the affected equipment while security agencies pursue the investigation. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and officials have not publicly attributed the strike.
The incident has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of civilian aviation infrastructure to low-cost drone attacks, which have become an increasingly common feature of conflicts across the region.
