The new Istanbul airport will officially be inaugurated on 29 October 2018, said the Turkish Minister of Transport Ahmet Arslan on Friday. But the first flights should already arrive in February next year.
This pharaonic project aims at making Istanbul one of the largest airports in the world.
The works are well advanced, with nearly 68 percent of the construction already completed. Thirty thousand workers are present every day on the site.
The total cost of the new airport is 10 billion euros. It will initially feature three runways and have a capacity of 90 million passengers per year. After a few years, the number of runways is expected to double to six and the capacity will reach 200 million passengers.
Istanbul Ataturk airport will continue to handle a limited number of smaller aircraft on short-haul flights.
