Hong Kong International Airport reaches 61 million passengers in 2025, cargo tops 5 million tonnes

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) handled 61 million passenger journeys in 2025, marking a strong recovery year with double-digit growth of 15%, supported by a robust Christmas peak that saw daily passenger numbers exceed 200,000 for eight days in December.

Flight movements increased by 8.7% year on year to 394,730, while full-year cargo throughput grew 2.7% to 5.07 million tonnes, reinforcing HKIA’s position as one of the world’s leading air cargo hubs.

December was particularly strong, with 5.8 million passengers handled, up 13.5% compared to the same month in 2024. Visitor and transfer traffic both recorded double-digit growth, driven mainly by increased demand on routes to and from the Chinese Mainland, Southeast Asia and North America. Cargo volumes in December rose 3.6% year on year to 462,000 tonnes, with transhipment traffic surging 18%, especially on routes linked to Southeast Asia, Europe and the Chinese Mainland.

Airport Authority Hong Kong CEO Vivian Cheung said the results marked a major milestone for HKIA as Asia’s leading international aviation hub. In 2025, the airport added 30 new destinations, including Abu Dhabi, Brussels and Dallas, increased frequencies on key routes, and received around 80 international awards recognising operational and service excellence.

Connectivity within the Greater Bay Area was also strengthened through the commissioning of two intermodal facilities: the opening of the Terminal 2 Coach Hall in September to enhance cross-boundary land transport, and the launch of the “Park & Fly” service in November, allowing GBA passengers to drive to HKIA and connect seamlessly to international flights.
