Fly from winter to the sunshine: Airlines offering swimming and sunbathing destinations
The new winter timetable comes into effect at Hamburg Airport on 29 October 2017. It is valid until 24 March 2018. For the 2017/2018 winter season, the airlines are focussing on winter sun destinations, but there are also ski resorts in the timetable. Two completely new destinations are joining Hamburg’s route network: Seville and Nantes. On another seven routes, passengers will now have the choice of additional airlines.
“Our passengers have varying expectations for their preferred winter vacation. Some want snow and the ski slopes, while others are keen to escape Hamburg’s winter and head for sunshine,” says Dr Joergen Kearsley, Head of Aviation Marketing at Hamburg Airport. “There is something for everyone in the coming winter timetable. Hamburg Airport is very well connected around the world. Around 60 airlines fly to 130 destinations. And our passengers can reach more than 1,000 destinations all over the world if they change planes just once.”
New destinations and airlines in Hamburg Airport’s route network
Two complete new destinations are joining Hamburg Airport’s route network in the winter timetable. Starting on 29 October, Ryanair is offering twice-weekly flights to Seville, Spain. And Hamburg Airport is welcoming an additional airport — HOP! From 29 October, the subsidiary of Air France will be operating three flights per week to the new destination of Nantes.
New services to existing destinations
Egypt is popular with airlines and travellers for the winter 201772018 timetable. Small Planet is operating flights to three Egyptian destinations in charter for tour operator FTI: From 1 November, the airline is operating one flight per week each to Hurghada and Marsa Alam. Small Planet Deutschland is also operating a weekly service to Sharm el Sheikh from 4 November. Germania will also be serving Sharm el Sheikh with a weekly service from 3 November. Tickets on Germania’s flights to Sharm el Sheikh are available individually or from various tour operators. Two other airlines are also operating to Hurghada for the winter timetable: Eurowings is commencing weekly full charter operations to the city for FTI on 29 October. Germania will continue its service to the Egyptian beach resort from the summer timetable, with a weekly winter service to Hurghada as of 29 October.
On 29 October, Ryanair is launching a new twice-weekly route to Marrakesh. TUIfly is taking Hamburg passengers to the southern sun, With a triangular route to Boa Vista and Sal, bringing the Cape Verde Islands back to Hamburg’s timetable are a brief interruption. The airline’s weekly service begins on 3 November. On the route from Hamburg to La Palma in the Canary Islands, Condor and Germania are being joined by Eurowings with a weekly service from 4 November.
Two new airlines are offering services to Innsbruck and increasing the frequency of operations there. Eurowings is flying to the Tyrolean capital twice weekly as of 2 December, with NIKI offering three services per week starting on 8 December. Both airlines are flying on the passengers’ favourite day, Saturday, and will carry skis free of charge, subject to the availability of space.
Increased frequencies on popular routes
Extra flights are being added to three popular destinations for the winter timetable. Aer Lingus has been offering four or five flights to Dublin each week, which will increase to ten. This includes a very practical late afternoon return flight from Dublin back to Hamburg. Dublin is the perfect destination for a city trip or a tour of Ireland — and is also a practical connecting point for an onward flight with Aer Lingus to North America. Ryanair is also boosting its operations to Dublin, with daily flights instead of the four per week currently offered. Ryanair is also increasing its service to Málaga from three to four flights per week. As of December, the oneworld carrier Iberia will increase its flights to the Spanish capital Madrid from four times a week to a daily operation.
Looking ahead to the 2018 summer timetable
For the 2018 summer timetable, due to enter operation on 24 March 2018, a number of new connections from Hamburg Airport have already been announced. Eurowings is adding two new routes for the 2018 summer season. The airline will be joining Condor with two flights per week to the Greek summer sun destination of Corfu and is also opening up a brand new destination with a weekly service to Jersey in the Channel Islands. Wizz Air will be increasing its operations to Gdansk from four to five flights per week for the summer timetable. A new SAS SAS Scandinavian Airlines route is sure to be a winner with cruise enthusiasts and lovers of Norway. The airline will fly to Bergen in Norway three times per week in the peak season, June to August 2018. For the summer timetable, Germania is launching a weekly service to the Greek island of Samos. Similarly, Ryanair will extend its portfolio in Hamburg through the addition of two very interesting city destinations. The Irish carrier will start serving Oslo (Torp) twice a week and the Scottish capital Edinburgh up to four times weekly, enabling city, culture and nature lovers to find their perfect short-break holidays in 2018.
