Record April traffic at Copenhagen Airport driven by international demand

Copenhagen Airport recorded its busiest April ever, handling 2.8 million passengers—up 6% year-on-year—as strong international demand and expanded route networks continue to fuel growth.

The increase reflects both seasonal travel during Easter and a broader rebound in global mobility. According to airport management, demand remains robust heading into the summer peak, despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

Southern Europe and Asia emerged as key growth markets. Spain was the most popular destination, with over 248,000 ?????ers—an 8% increase—travelling to cities such as Malaga, Barcelona and Mallorca. Meanwhile, traffic to Asia surged by 14%, supported by new and expanded routes from carriers including Vietnam Airlines and China Eastern Airlines, as well as increased frequencies by Scandinavian Airlines to destinations such as Seoul.

Passenger composition highlights the airport’s international reach: Danish and Swedish travellers accounted for 36% and 13% respectively, with significant volumes also coming from the UK, the U.S., and Norway.

The surge in air traffic is closely linked to Denmark’s growing tourism sector. Data from Statistics Denmark shows international overnight stays rising by 8.1%, with particularly strong growth from non-European markets. Asian visitors are a standout segment, with overnight stays up 40%, driven in part by new direct connections to Shanghai and Seoul.

Despite the positive momentum, cost pressures are building. Rising oil prices—linked to instability in the Middle East—are pushing up jet fuel costs. While this has not yet materially impacted traffic levels, some airlines have made minor schedule adjustments, and the airport continues to monitor the situation closely.

Overall, the data underscores Copenhagen’s strengthening position as a Northern European hub, benefiting from expanded long-haul connectivity and sustained inbound tourism growth.
