Cologne Bonn Airport has officially opened a fully modernised security checkpoint featuring 11 screening lanes equipped with the latest CT scanners, becoming the first major airport in Germany to fully deploy the technology across its security screening area.
The airport invested around €25 million in the project, which forms part of its wider “Next Chapter” terminal modernisation programme. The new CT scanners allow passengers to leave electronic devices and liquids in their hand luggage, while increasing the permitted liquid limit to up to two litres per container, helping to speed up security screening.
The redesigned checkpoint also introduces improved lighting and wayfinding, optimised passenger flows and a dedicated “Kids Lane” to make security screening easier for families travelling with children.
The project follows Cologne Bonn Airport’s assumption of responsibility for organising passenger and baggage screening in January 2025. Airport management said the investment will improve efficiency, passenger comfort and competitiveness, while airline partner Eurowings welcomed the upgrade as an important step towards a smoother travel experience.
