Works to extend Brussels South Charleroi Airport’s sole runway have started

This morning, works to extend Brussels South Charleroi Airport’s single runway (06/24) have started. The construction is expected to be completed by June 2021. More than 10 million passengers are to be expected by 2026, creating 1,500 new jobs. With the extension, local residents will be less bothered by aircraft noise.

The airport hopes to attract new carriers and more long-haul traffic. Previously, the Airbus A340s of Air Belgium were able to depart for Hong Kong, but with a restricted take-off weight. These flights ended in September last year and no A340 flights are scheduled at this moment.

The extension – from 2,550 to 3,200 meters – will cost approximately €30 million. “An important milestone, the original idea dates back twenty years ago already, ” Brussels South Charleroi Airport chairman Laurent Levêque said.

It’s the culmination of a long struggle and the work of a few years, with twists and ups and downs,” confirms Jean-Luc Crucke, Walloon Minister of airports. “We are at a pivotal moment for the future of the airport,” he added.
