The confirmation of our information that Brussels South Charleroi Airport will close completely for several months in the second half of 2028 to allow the reconstruction of its only runway has prompted concern from staff representatives, who fear the long-term impact on jobs and airline operations.

Trade union SETCa questioned the Walloon government’s strategy for the airport, warning that there are no guarantees airlines will restore all routes once the airport reopens. Union representative Alain Goelens also highlighted uncertainty over the financial consequences for employees who could face temporary unemployment during the shutdown, saying many questions from staff remain unanswered.

Airport operator BSCA defended the project, describing it as a “historic” infrastructure investment. The airport stressed that the runway, which has an estimated lifespan of around 25 years, has reached the point where complete renewal is essential. Several other modernisation projects will also be carried out during the closure to minimise the overall disruption and avoid repeated works in the future.

Responding to the criticism, Walloon Airports Minister Cécile Neven said the renovation has been planned for years. According to her office, SOWAER and Charleroi Airport have been studying the project for a long time, with a joint decision on the organisation of the 2028 works having already been taken in November 2024. The minister reiterated that the investment is necessary to safeguard the airport’s safety, operational performance and long-term competitiveness.
