Brussels South Charleroi Airport has officially opened a new security screening facility designed to streamline passenger flow and significantly improve the travel experience ahead of the busy summer season.

Located on Princess Astrid Plaza opposite Terminal 1, the newly constructed building is a rapid-response infrastructure project, conceived and completed in just five months for €5 million. The initiative comes after periods of heavy congestion last summer, when passengers experienced long wait times during peak travel periods.

Spanning 1,740 square metres, the facility now houses the airport’s main security screening operations. It features 14 security lanes—up from the previous nine—along with a spacious preparation zone equipped with recycling bins and a large, well-lit waiting area. Improved signage throughout the space helps passengers better understand security procedures, including hand luggage restrictions, while on-site stewards guide travellers to the appropriate lanes.

The relocation of much of the security process outside Terminal 1 has also freed up space inside the departure hall, making check-in areas more efficient and less crowded. Two dedicated security lanes remain within the terminal for passengers requiring special assistance and for Fast Track users, ensuring a smoother experience for priority travellers.

Christophe Segaert, CEO Brussels South Charleroi Airport

Airport CEO Christophe Segaert emphasised that the project was designed with both passengers and staff in mind. He highlighted that improved working conditions for security personnel directly enhance service quality and operational efficiency.

The facility was inaugurated in the presence of Cécile Neven, Minister for Energy, the Air-Climate Plan, Housing and Airports in Wallonia. She described the project as a “pragmatic and concrete response” to past congestion issues, noting that it was fully financed by the airport operator and contributes to both service quality and regional economic development.

With the summer 2026 travel season approaching, the airport expects the new facility to deliver a more predictable and comfortable journey for passengers while enabling staff to better manage increasing traffic volumes. The project marks a significant step in the airport’s broader strategy to modernise infrastructure and enhance the overall passenger experience.
