Brussels South Charleroi Airport (BSCA) has advanced to Level 4+ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme, placing it among the 12% most advanced airports worldwide in carbon management.
The achievement follows rapid progress since joining the ACA in 2022, when the airport was immediately certified at Level 2. By 2023, it had reached Level 4, and now just one year later, BSCA has climbed to Level 4+, the penultimate step before full Level 5 accreditation.
Key initiatives behind this progress include:
- Replacing airside vehicles with electric alternatives
- Optimising energy use in heating, ventilation, and electricity
- Expanding waste recycling and management
- Installing solar panels on Terminal 2
- Raising staff and partner awareness on CO? reduction
Level 4+ not only requires measurable CO? reductions and analysis beyond the airport’s direct operations, but also requires offsetting residual emissions. BSCA is backing two international projects:
- A 60MW wind power project in Karnataka, India, supplying renewable energy to 100,000 people and avoiding 130,000 tonnes of CO? annually
- An afforestation project in Uruguay, restoring 18,000 hectares of degraded land through reforestation, sustainable wood production, and ecosystem recovery
CEO Christophe Segaert said: “Since joining in 2022, we’ve reached a new milestone every year, proving our structured commitment to decarbonisation. Achieving Level 4+ shows BSCA is on par with Europe’s leading airports in environmental performance. Our goal remains Carbon Net Zero by 2030.”
BSCA is now one of just 76 airports worldwide (out of 638 in the ACA programme) accredited at Level 4+ or 5, confirming its leadership role in sustainable airport management.
