The strike of the air traffic controllers at skeyes – ensuring the safety and efficiency of air traffic in Belgium – seems to have the biggest impact at the airports of Charleroi and Liège. This morning at Charleroi, airlines were forced to delay 16 flights. “Those delays will have a knock-on effect for the rest of today’s flight schedule,” Charleroi airport spokesman Vincent Grassa explains. At Liège Airport around 40 cargo flights got delayed.
Last night at 22:00 (UTC +1), the strike started at Brussels Airport. Every two hours another airport felt the results of the social actions. Ostend Airport (between 00:00 and 02:00), Liège Airport (from 02:00 to 04:00) and Charleroi Airport (between 06:00 and 08:00).
Belgian airspace was closed between 04:00 and 06:00 resulting in a few delayed flights.
The unions will give the management another week until the next conciliation meeting on 18 March. “If there isn’t any improvement new actions will follow,” the unions threatened.
