Severe air traffic disruptions at Brussels Airport due to intense snowfall

On Monday 11 December 2017 Brussels Airport was hit by intense snowfall, causing many flight delays and flight cancellations.

Shortly after 08:30 local time, the first snow started to fall at Brussels Airport. Few moments later the precipitation increased and the airport was hit by intense snowfall. As a result, many flights got delayed or even cancelled.

Flights bound for Brussels Airport had to enter holding patterns near FLO, KERKY and ANT.

Around 10:00 the airport even had to be completely closed so its winter operations team could clear the runways and taxiways. At moment of writing the airport was still closed. The airport even advised passengers not to come to the airport.

As a result of the airport’s closing, most flights that were holding during the snowfall have diverted to surrounding airport such as Dusseldorf (DUS), Rotterdam (RTM), Liège (LGG), Frankfurt (FRA and HHN) and Luxembourg (LUX).

In the early afternoon, Brussels Airlines decided to cancel all its flights for the remainder of the day, except for the long-haul flights listed below, which were still operated but with delays:
