European Regulation on explosive trace detection enters into application in Europe: implementation at Brussels Airport

Share

On Tuesday, 1 September, the new European regulation on procedures for explosive trace detection on passengers enters into force. Brussels Airport has introduced explosive trace detection procedures and installed specialist equipment at the various security controls in Piers A and B and the transfer platforms.

In 2014, the European Union issued rules for all European airports to use specialist techniques to detect explosives hidden on the passengers and traces of explosive in their hand luggage. This rule applies to all airports in Europe. Explosive trace detection has been carried out since 1 March 2015. This detection must also be applied to passengers from 1 September.

Passengers going through security control at Brussels Airport will be checked at random for the presence of traces of explosive. The eight hundred security agents in charge of checking hand luggage and body searches have been trained specially in using detection equipment and the new procedures in force. The inspectors of Brussels Airport Company who monitor these procedures, have also received adequate training. Brussels Airport Company has invested 1.5 million euros in the necessary equipment for these checks.

Brussels Airport has also done everything necessary to limit the inconvenience and delays for the passengers.
