Brussels Airport has launched a €25 million programme to renovate all 33 passenger boarding bridges at Pier A, which primarily handles Schengen flights. The phased project is scheduled for completion in 2031.
The oldest bridges date from Pier A’s opening in 2002 and have been in intensive daily use for nearly 25 years. Each bridge has been individually assessed, with worn technical and structural components to be refurbished or replaced. The work will include new control systems and sensors, alongside the renewal of floors, windows and other components where required.
The upgrades are intended to improve efficiency for ground-handling teams and extend the bridges’ operational life by at least 15 years while ensuring compliance with current safety standards.
To limit disruption, no more than three bridges will be unavailable simultaneously, falling to a maximum of two during the busy summer season. Their movable sections will be detached and transported to the manufacturer for several months of refurbishment before being returned and reinstalled.
The project forms part of Brussels Airport’s continuing investment in passenger facilities serving around 25 million travellers annually.
