On 22 March 2017 Brussels Airport will commemorate the attacks on the airport last year with a brief ceremony in front of the departure hall and the re-inauguration of the statue ‘Flight in mind’ by artist Olivier Strebelle (which was damaged during the attacks) on the airport site.
Their Royal Highnesses King Philip and Queen Mathilde and Prime Minister Charles Michel will arrive in front of the departure hall at 07:30 and will be greeting victims and rescue workers. There will be a minute of silence at 07:58, time of the explosion of the first bomb, followed by the laying of a wreath by His Majesty King Philip. At 08:00, one of the victims and a rescue worker will read their testimonies.
The guests will then move to the new site of the statue “Flight in Mind”, where the inauguration will take place at 08:30, followed by a speech by Brussels Airport CEO Arnaud Feist and further testimonies. The ceremony will close with the laying of a wreath at 08:55.
On Wednesday morning 22 March, a commemorative service is being held at Brussels Airport.
This means that between 6:00am and 9:00am on the day, users will not be able to directly access the departures hall from car parks P1, P2 and P3 via the departures level (+3). Between 6:00am and 9:00am, the airport terminal will be accessible only via the arrivals level (+2) or via the bus station level (0). Stewards will be present at the car parks to point this out to passengers.
