April marked the start of the summer season at Bordeaux Airport with a highly positive trend and a traffic increase of 9.4% compared with April 2017. Year-to-date traffic over the first 4 months of 2018 was up 5.1%. This rise follows a 24.5% increase in international flight seats on offer for the summer period. The low-cost sector progressed by 22.4% compared with 2017. Domestic traffic dropped by 6.8%, heavily impacted once again by strikes at HOP! Air France.
International flights posted 24.5% growth in April, totalling 343,400 passengers. This growth was boosted by Spring holidays both here and in other European countries.
Intercontinental hubs showed strong growth: Amsterdam (+4.2%), Lisbon (+8.6%), Brussels (+17.5%), Dublin (+20.4%), Istanbul (+38%), Madrid (+45.9%) and Frankfurt (+211%). Zurich, the Swiss hub newly accessible from Bordeaux, has already carried 6,500 monthly passengers.
Northern Europe posted excellent results: London (+10.4%), Berlin (+17.3%), Bristol (+30.3%). Mediterranean airports continued to attract travellers flying from Bordeaux: Tunis (+29.3%), Dubrovnik (+63%), Palma (+64.1%), Palermo (+64.1%), Malaga (+77.6%) and Pisa (+79.4%). Traffic to North Africa progressed by 8.4% in April. New destinations in Eastern Europe attracted 2,800 passengers to Bucharest, 2,600 to Budapest and 2,000 to Warsaw, while traffic to Prague increased by 238%, representing 3,500 passengers.
Domestic traffic declined by 6.8%, representing 238,00 passengers. Traffic to and from Paris was affected by strikes at Air France Hop !, falling by 23.1%. April saw the cancellation of 251 flights, mainly on La Navette flights to and from Orly and Charles-de-Gaulle.
Transverse traffic increased by 10.2%, boosted by flights to Lyon (+28.2%), Nice (+28.2%) and Lille (+29.4%). Corsica entered its peak season with 12,400 passengers and 26.3% growth on flights to Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi and Figari.
For low-cost airlines, traffic continues to progress, up 22.4% for a total of 323,000 passengers. This represents more than half of all traffic at Bordeaux Airport.
