Thanks to the significant capacity expansion at TUI fly, the number of passengers of defunct VLM Airlines was more than compensated and the airport was able to close with modest growth in August 2019: 33,379 passengers. This is 1.07% more compared to August 2018 (33,023).
During the two summer months, the airport welcomed 66,337 passengers. That is only 0.9% less than the same period last year (66,935 in 2018) despite the loss of VLM.
This modest growth is due to the general increase in the number of passengers to all destinations. In particular, we notice a strong demand for ethnic destinations such as Nador and Tangier. For example, the increase of the frequency to Tangier proves to be a success. The new Tunisian destination Enfidha and the Polish Lublin are also in high demand.
The route to London Southend ended on 1 September but will be picked up from Monday 9 September by the restart of the business route to London City with the new airline Air Antwerp. The airport is heading for a further increase in passenger numbers in the coming months since Air Antwerp will have a frequency of 3 rotations per day during weekdays and 1 flight on Sunday evening.
The on-time performance was an excellent 98.3% in August.
