On 15 August in the afternoon, air traffic at Amsterdam Schiphol was heavily disturbed after a communication system failure at air traffic control. At around 13:00 (UTC +2) all incoming and outgoing flight traffic was halted. Many aircraft circled over Belgium and the North Sea, others diverted to airports outside The Netherlands (about ten aircraft diverted to Brussels Airport).
About one hour later a limited amount of incoming flights was able to land at Schiphol, then the communication system was stable again and air traffic restarted. “It will take some time before the situation at our airport is running as normal again, so please check your airline or http://Schiphol.nl for current flight information,” the airport authorities tweeted.
