Schiphol has set out an ambitious long-term vision centred on “quality and balance,” announcing a €10 billion investment programme through 2035 and a comprehensive master plan for the airport’s redevelopment toward 2050. The plans aim to improve the traveller experience, strengthen working conditions and enhance operational resilience while reducing noise and emissions. For KLM, Schiphol’s largest airline customer, the redevelopment presents significant opportunities to modernise critical facilities and reinforce the Netherlands’ position as a key global aviation hub.

Under the Schiphol Centre Master Plan, the airport will build a new light-filled terminal, renovate multiple piers, expand gate capacity for larger and quieter aircraft, and upgrade lounges, retail areas and circulation spaces. The airport will also improve landside and public-transport access, including work toward a proposed Amsterdam–Schiphol–Hoofddorp metro line. Schiphol says this expansion is essential to return the airport to the top tier of European hubs and to provide sufficient space to upgrade ageing infrastructure without disrupting operations.

Sustainability is a core pillar of the strategy. Schiphol aims to reduce ground-based emissions by 90% by 2030 compared with 2019, increase the use of electric vehicles and equipment, and design new buildings to the latest environmental standards. It is also working with airlines and ground handlers to cut emissions at the stands, including providing shore-power and air-conditioning at all gates and deploying electric TaxiBots to move aircraft without engine use.

KLM welcomed the airport’s long-term vision, highlighting that the preservation of Schiphol’s single-terminal layout is crucial for maintaining seamless connections across its global network. The airline said the redevelopment will enable the modernisation of its catering and cargo facilities, creating more efficient operations and improved working environments. KLM has signed a letter of intent with Schiphol covering the relocation of catering and cargo activities and the vacating of the Topside office building, with a formal agreement expected in the second quarter of 2026. Compensation for these relocations, scheduled for 2030, will be reinvested in new facilities.

While supporting Schiphol’s ambition to restore its international competitiveness, KLM stressed that the airport must remain affordable for both airlines and passengers to ensure its long-term attractiveness. Schiphol’s strategic plan for 2025–2035 outlines six priorities, including regaining top-three European hub status, improving labour conditions, fostering sustainability, strengthening regional airports and building a financially robust organisation.

Together, the airport’s redevelopment plans and KLM’s aligned investments mark a major step toward shaping a modern, sustainable, and high-quality gateway for the Netherlands.
