Runway 09-27 (Buitenveldertbaan) at Amsterdam Schiphol will undergo large-scale maintenance from 10 May to 28 September 2025, during which it will be fully out of service.
The project includes resurfacing with 100,000 tonnes of asphalt, replacing 1,300 lights with LEDs, renewing drainage systems, installing 400 km of cables, and updating 14,000 m² of runway markings. Work will also be done on the intersection with Runway 18L-36R (Aalsmeerbaan), nearby taxiways, and surrounding terrain.
During the closure, Schiphol will rely more heavily on Runway 06-24 (Kaagbaan) for departures and Runway 04-22 (Schiphol-Oostbaan) for landings, which may increase aircraft noise for residents under those flight paths. However, the decision to permit large aircraft on the Oostbaan goes against a critical safety recommendation issued by the OVV in its July 2024 report. Following a “serious incident” in January 2023, the OVV recommended that Schiphol cease using the Oostbaan for large aircraft.
The airport is coordinating the project with contractor Heijmans and Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL), which will also upgrade the Instrument Landing System.
Runway 09-27 is expected to reopen for daytime landings on 29 September and return to full operational status in all weather conditions by 12 November 2025. Local residents can follow updates via the Schiphol website or contact the Local Community Contact Centre (BAS).
