Royal Schiphol Group reported a strong operational and financial performance in the first half of 2025, marked by rising passenger numbers, increased investment, and a notable shift toward quieter aircraft due to a new airport fee structure.
A total of 37.2 million passengers travelled through Schiphol, Eindhoven, and Rotterdam The Hague airports—a 3% increase over 2024. Schiphol alone handled 32.8 million passengers and 232,709 flights, making it the second-best connected airport in Europe with 299 direct destinations, 123 of them intercontinental.
To reduce noise, Schiphol introduced new airport charges on April 1 that reward airlines for operating quieter aircraft and for flying during the day instead of at night. Within three months of implementation, the share of aircraft in the two quietest categories rose by 7 percentage points to 30%, while the noisiest aircraft dropped by the same margin.
CEO Pieter van Oord said the results reflect the early success of Schiphol’s quality-focused transformation: “Travellers feel more welcome, working conditions are improving, and aircraft are becoming quieter.” One highlight was the installation of lifting aids at all 385 baggage hall workstations—an industry first.
Financially, the group posted an underlying net profit of €214 million, more than doubling the €99 million reported in the first half of 2024. Revenue rose by 20.4% to €1.26 billion. However, cash flow after investments was negative €111 million, with Schiphol investing €495 million in infrastructure, including terminal upgrades, runway maintenance, and sustainability projects.
CFO Robert Carsouw noted that maintaining a solid financial foundation is essential, with €6 billion planned in investments over five years.
Cargo volumes declined 7% to 0.7 million tonnes, while aircraft movements were up 1% overall. Despite steady growth, total air traffic at Schiphol remains 4% below pre-pandemic levels.
Schiphol expects to handle close to 70 million passengers in 2025, just shy of the 71.7 million recorded in 2019, and will continue renovations throughout the year, including the opening of Pier A, planned for April 2027.
