A small private aircraft crashed in central Mexico on Monday while attempting an emergency landing, killing all 10 people on board, including three minors. The accident occurred in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area around five kilometres from Toluca Airport and approximately 50 kilometres west of Mexico City.
The Cessna 650 Citation III aircraft (registered XA-PRO), which had departed from Acapulco on Mexico’s Pacific coast with destination Toluca, was carrying eight passengers and two crew members. According to Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández, the plane appeared to be attempting to land on a nearby soccer field but instead struck the metal roof of a warehouse.
The impact triggered a major fire, as the warehouse contained fuel and gas tanks. As a precaution, authorities evacuated the surrounding area, with around 130 people forced to leave their homes and workplaces.
Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft was spinning erratically before the explosion. Emergency services responded quickly to contain the fire and secure the area. The Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
