Swedavia, the state-owned airport operator, has been left with the responsibility of removing the iconic Jumbo Stay aeroplane hotel after its operator went bankrupt earlier this year with over SEK 4.3 million in debt.
The converted Boeing 747, a quirky fixture at the entrance to Arlanda Airport for 16 years, has become an abandoned aircraft after the bankruptcy estate declared it had no funds to handle its removal. With no buyer or operator willing to take over, and Swedavia refusing to renew the lease, the trustee officially abandoned the aircraft.
Swedavia, as the landowner, is now obliged to manage the 160-tonne aircraft shell. “We are working on the issue based on the new conditions,” said Swedavia’s Charlotte Lundgren. A long-term solution remains unclear, and no quick resolution is expected.
