Swedavia and Luftfartsverket (LFV) have become the first in Europe to introduce a groundbreaking air traffic approach concept at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The new procedure, known as Established on RNP (EoR), allows aircraft to perform curved approaches more frequently — improving efficiency, capacity, and sustainability in air traffic operations.
“It is gratifying that Swedavia is the first in Europe to apply this new concept for managing arrivals,” said Susanne Norman, Director of Operations at Swedavia. “Enabling more curved approaches is one of the most effective ways to support airlines in their transition work — alongside the increased use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).”
The EoR concept enables shorter and more flexible approach paths, allowing more efficient sequencing of aircraft during peak periods. This leads to reduced flight times, lower emissions, and less congestion on runways dedicated to arrivals. To perform curved approaches, airlines must obtain a special permit from their National Supervisory Authority and ensure their aircraft and crews are certified for RNP AR (Required Navigation Performance – Authorisation Required) operations.
“This modernisation of airspace demonstrates how air traffic control can help reduce aviation’s environmental impact,” said Anna Granberg, Director of Operations at LFV. “Traffic flow into Arlanda becomes more efficient, and arriving aircraft can fly shorter routes with lower emissions.”
Airlines have welcomed the initiative.
“Shorter approaches mean lower fuel burn and reduced emissions,” said Charlotte Holmbergh, Country Director Corporate Affairs at Norwegian. “Our goal is to reduce emissions by 30 percent by 2030, and operational improvements like this are key to reaching that target.”
“SAS welcomes all initiatives that help reduce fuel consumption, noise, and emissions,” added Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, Head of External Communication & PR at SAS. “The new approach concept is an important step toward a more efficient and sustainable airspace around Arlanda.”
With this implementation, Arlanda cements its position as a European leader in sustainable air traffic innovation.
