On 16 August just before midnight (UTC +8), a Xiamen Air Boeing 737 (B-5498) flying from Xiamen to Manila suffered from a runway excursion upon landing at Manila. First flight MF8667 was holding Northeast of the airport due to adverse weather conditions (storms and heavy rain was reported), the pilots decided to go around on the first approach. On the second approach, however, the aircraft skidded off runway 24/06. The left engine got detached from the wing, and an emergency evacuation was initiated.
Operations on runway 24/06 have been suspended. Runway 13/31 is the only runway that is operational, yet for narrow-body aircraft only. Xiamen Air announced on social media that 157 passengers and 8 crew members evacuated safely after the emergency incident. The airline confirmed that no injured passengers have been reported.
Update (17 August 2018): Huge disruptions continue at Manila Airport, all flights operated by a wide-body aircraft have been cancelled, as they can only use runway 24/06, which is still closed.
