Wizz Air adds third aircraft to Catania base, expanding routes and frequencies

Share

Wizz Air and SAC, the operator of Catania and Comiso airports, have announced a major expansion of their partnership with the addition of a third Airbus A321neo aircraft to Wizz Air’s Catania base from May 2026. The move underlines the growing strategic importance of eastern Sicily within the airline’s Italian and international network.

The additional aircraft will generate around 500,000 new seats annually, create 40 direct jobs (bringing Wizz Air’s local workforce to 150), and support more than 350 indirect jobs across the regional economy. Since launching operations in Sicily in 2009, Wizz Air has carried nearly 9.7 million passengers through Catania and Comiso.

The expansion includes the launch of a new international route from Catania to Tel Aviv, operating four times weekly from 5 May 2026, alongside an already extensive network serving major European destinations. Domestically, Wizz Air will significantly increase frequencies on key commuter routes: Catania–Milan Malpensa will rise from 12 to 19 weekly flights, and Catania–Turin from 11 to 14 weekly flights, both starting 4 May 2026.

With the third aircraft, Wizz Air will operate 18 routes across 10 countries from Catania and Comiso. The airline highlighted strong operational performance in 2025, with over 1.7 million seats offered, more than 7,000 flights operated, a 99.8% completion rate and improved punctuality.

Both Wizz Air and SAC described the investment as a clear signal of long-term commitment to Sicily, strengthening regional connectivity, supporting tourism and business travel, and reinforcing Catania Airport’s role as a key hub in the Mediterranean aviation market.
