European ultra-low-cost airline Wizz Air has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft, marking a major milestone in the airline’s ambitious growth and fleet modernisation strategy. This next-generation aircraft will allow Wizz Air to operate longer routes, including new intercontinental destinations, while maintaining its signature ultra-low-cost business model.
The Airbus A321XLR (Extra Long Range) features extended range capabilities of up to 4,700 nautical miles (around 8,700 km), enabling Wizz Air to launch direct flights from Central and Eastern Europe to the Middle East, Asia, and even parts of North America. This opens up exciting new opportunities for passengers seeking affordable long-haul travel.
Equipped with 239 seats in a single-class configuration, the A321XLR offers enhanced fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and lower operating costs compared to previous generation aircraft. The cabin is designed with passenger comfort in mind, featuring the new Airbus Airspace cabin with larger overhead bins, ambient lighting, and improved seating ergonomics.
Wizz Air’s CEO József Váradi commented: “The arrival of our first A321XLR is a game-changer for Wizz Air. It redefines what’s possible in low-cost aviation and brings us one step closer to offering long-haul flights at truly affordable prices.”
The airline plans to base the first A321XLRs at key hubs including Budapest and Abu Dhabi, with route announcements expected in the coming weeks. As part of its strategy to become the greenest airline in Europe, Wizz Air continues investing in modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, with over 300 A321neo family aircraft still on order.
With the A321XLR, Wizz Air sets its sights firmly on reshaping the future of air travel—combining innovation, sustainability, and affordability across greater distances than ever before.
