Will Airbus announce the end of the A380 programme tomorrow?

The Airbus Board meets tomorrow and could take an important decision about the future of its A380 programme, along with the publication of the company’s 2018 full-year earnings.

Indeed, Airbus might decide to stop production of the world’s largest airliner, according to many sources. In the last few weeks:

  • Australian carrier Qantas announced the cancellation of an additional order for eight Airbus A380. Qantas currently operates 12 A380s.
  • The negotiations between Airbus and Emirates leaked to the press about the possibility to cancel its remaining orders for 36 Airbus A380 and replace them with the A350s.
  • Qatar Airways announced that it would stop flying its Airbus A380 fleet after 10 years of service.
  • Singapore Airlines did not renew the lease for its first A380s
  • Air France will not take the last A380s on order.

The A380 entered into service only 12 years ago. Any decision to stop the production must be approved by the board. The plans to build a more efficient A380plus would thus be shelved…
