Delta Air Lines and Korean Air will jointly acquire a 25% stake in Canadian airline WestJet for $550 million USD. Delta will buy a 15% share for $330 million, while Korean Air will acquire 10% for $220 million. Delta also plans to sell 2.3% of its stake to Air France-KLM for $50 million.
Onex, which bought WestJet in 2019, remains the majority owner.
Though the deal strengthens ties among SkyTeam alliance members, experts say it’s unclear if passengers will see operational changes.
The deal complies with Canadian ownership laws and is not expected to significantly impact Canada’s airline market.
