Vietnam Airlines has placed its first Boeing single-aisle order, finalising a purchase of 50 737 MAX aircraft to support domestic and regional network expansion across Southeast Asia.
The order centres on the 737-8 variant, enabling the carrier to scale short- and medium-haul operations as Vietnam’s air traffic is projected to exceed 75 million annual passengers within the next decade. With a capacity of up to 200 passengers and a range of approximately 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km), the 737-8 is positioned to optimise high-demand regional routes while maintaining operational flexibility.
This transaction strengthens Vietnam Airlines’ long-standing partnership with Boeing and complements its existing widebody operations with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, of which the airline currently operates 17 aircraft serving routes between Vietnam and Europe.
The 737 MAX and 787 families deliver 20–25% lower fuel consumption versus previous-generation aircraft, supporting fleet modernisation, cost control and sustainability objectives. The introduction of the 737-8 enhances network resilience and aligns with the airline’s ambition to elevate service standards and expand regional connectivity.
The announcement was witnessed by Vietnamese and U.S. government officials in Washington, D.C., underscoring the transaction’s strategic significance within Vietnam’s expanding civil aviation sector.
Collectively, the order signals Vietnam Airlines’ intent to balance widebody long-haul growth with single-aisle regional scaling, creating a dual-fleet architecture designed for capacity optimisation and fuel efficiency amid accelerating Southeast Asian demand.
