United Airlines has introduced a special “Stars and Stripes” aircraft livery to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States while celebrating the success of its military pilot recruitment programme.
The new red, white and blue design will appear on a Boeing 787-10 (N91007) and a Boeing 737-800 (N78285), both built in the United States. Featuring 50 stars representing the states and a stylised stripe motif, the livery honours military service members and veterans, with commemorative plaques installed on both aircraft.
The announcement was made at Washington Dulles International Airport by United CEO Scott Kirby and U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy.
United also highlighted the growth of its Military Pilot Program, through which nearly 600 active-duty and reserve military pilots have transitioned to the airline since 2024. The carrier expects a further 500 pilots to join through the programme by the end of 2027. The initiative allows military aviators to secure a conditional job offer with United well before leaving military service.
The airline currently employs more than 18,000 pilots, including over 4,500 veterans, and more than 8,300 military veterans across its workforce. United said the programme forms part of a broader commitment to supporting service members, veterans and military families through recruitment, employee networks and partnerships with organisations such as the USO and the Fisher House Foundation.
The announcement combines a symbolic celebration of America’s 250th anniversary with a demonstration of United’s long-term strategy to attract experienced military aviators and strengthen its pilot pipeline.
