A United Airlines Boeing 737-700 (registration N54711) carrying 106 passengers and five crew members narrowly avoided a collision with a drone while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) on Friday, prompting a Federal Aviation Administration investigation.
The crew of flight UA1513 from Key West (EYW) reported spotting a circular drone, estimated to be about three feet wide, roughly 100 feet below the aircraft at around 17:20 local time. Air traffic control recordings captured the pilot warning, “We almost hit a drone.” The aircraft landed safely about 10 minutes later without incident.
Around the same time, pilots of a United Express flight operated by GoJet Airlines also reported seeing a drone at approximately 2,000 feet during their approach to Newark.
The incident adds to growing concerns over unauthorised drone activity near airports as the United States prepares for a surge in air travel during the busy Fourth of July holiday period, with the Transportation Security Administration expecting to screen nearly 18.7 million passengers between June 30 and July 6.
