A United Airlines transatlantic flight from Chicago to London made an emergency diversion to Halifax on Saturday night after a technical problem aboard a 33-year-old Boeing 767.
Flight UA920 departed O’Hare International Airport for Heathrow Airport. About two hours into the flight over eastern Canada, the crew declared an emergency by squawking 7700. The aircraft was diverted to Halifax Stanfield International Airport, where it landed safely just before midnight local time.
The aircraft involved, a 33-year-old Boeing 767-300ER registered N652UA, reportedly suffered an engine-related issue, though United described it only as a “technical issue” requiring immediate maintenance checks. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.
Passengers were stranded overnight in Halifax while replacement travel arrangements were organised for Sunday morning. The incident has renewed attention on United’s ageing Boeing 767 fleet, following several recent technical events involving similar aircraft.
