A United Airlines Boeing 777-300ER (registration N2138U) operating flight UA858 from Shanghai to San Francisco was forced to divert to Tokyo Narita Airport after a passenger became disruptive shortly after departure on June 24.
The aircraft, carrying 285 passengers and 16 crew members, landed in Japan, where local police met the flight and removed the passenger. According to airline and passenger accounts, the individual became increasingly agitated during the early phase of the flight, arguing with cabin crew, throwing items in her seat area, and behaving erratically.
The situation escalated into a confrontation with crew members, prompting the captain to intervene. As the disturbance continued, the crew ultimately decided to divert the aircraft for safety reasons. United Airlines stated that law enforcement boarded the aircraft upon arrival, removed the passenger, and that maintenance checks were carried out before the flight continued to San Francisco.
Passengers reported that the diversion occurred roughly four hours after departure from Shanghai Pudong Airport, and that fuel had to be offloaded to meet landing requirements at Narita. The aircraft later resumed its journey following the delay.
The incident adds to a series of recent onboard disruptions affecting long-haul commercial flights, highlighting ongoing challenges airlines face in managing unruly passenger behaviour.
