A United Airlines flight struck a light pole of the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 95) and the trailer of a bakery truck with its landing gear and underbelly while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, but landed safely with no injuries reported.
Flight UA169, operated by a Boeing 767-400 registered N77066, was arriving from Venice with 221 passengers and 10 crew members on board when the incident occurred around 13:50 during final approach to runway 29.
The aircraft was able to land normally and taxi to the gate. United confirmed that maintenance teams are assessing damage (there is a hole in the side of the plane), while the Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation into how the collision happened.
