Medical emergency: United Airlines’ flight UA179 diverts to Goose Bay; crew and passengers stuck for 15 hours

On 19 January, a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 (N76010) from New York Newark to Hong Kong diverted to Goose Bay, Canada after a medical emergency. After the passenger was taken to hospital, passengers and crew were eager to continue their journey. An inoperative door, however, forced to airline to ground the aircraft. Repairing the door took longer than expected/wasn’t possible.

The 250 passengers were unable to go into the terminal building as at night, Goose Bay doesn’t have immigration officers available. In total, the passengers were forced to stay inside the aircraft for around 15 hours.

United Airlines sent a rescue aircraft to bring the stranded passengers back to Newark.
