The United Arab Emirates has officially entered a new era of passenger rail transport with the launch of its long-awaited national passenger rail network, marking one of the country’s most significant infrastructure developments in recent decades.
The new service, operated by Etihad Rail, will connect major cities and regions across the UAE, providing a fast, comfortable and sustainable alternative to road travel. Designed to complement the country’s world-class aviation sector, the network is expected to ease highway congestion while supporting tourism, business travel and regional economic growth.
Modern trains will offer passengers a high level of comfort, with journey times significantly reduced compared with travelling by car. The railway will eventually link key destinations including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and other emirates, creating the UAE’s first nationwide passenger rail service.
The passenger network builds on the success of Etihad Rail’s freight operations, which have been expanding across the country since 2023. Once fully operational, the railway is also expected to form part of the planned wider Gulf rail network, strengthening transport links between the UAE and neighbouring countries.
The launch represents another milestone in the UAE’s ambitious transport strategy, reinforcing its position as a global hub for mobility by integrating rail alongside its internationally renowned airports and airlines.
