Turkey announced Friday it has closed its airspace to Israeli government planes and banned arms shipments bound for Israel from transiting through Turkish ports, further tightening restrictions imposed last year. The measures also block maritime trade between third countries and Israel.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told parliament that Ankara has “completely cut off” trade with Israel, accusing it of committing genocide in Gaza. Direct trade ties worth $7 billion annually were severed in May 2024, but Turkey is now extending the embargo to transit routes and airspace access.
The move underscores Turkey’s sharp criticism of Israel’s Gaza campaign, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeatedly likening Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Hitler.
