A TUI fly Belgium Boeing 787-8 with registration OO-JDL operating TUI fly Netherlands triangular flight OR511 from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Cancun, Mexico, on 24 February made an emergency diversion to Bermuda after the crew reported a potential onboard issue while crossing the North Atlantic.
The aircraft landed safely in Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport, where emergency services were on standby. No serious injuries were reported. The diversion was apparently caused by a technical issue combined with a medical emergency.
The aircraft has been undergoing technical inspections in Bermuda. The exact cause of the diversion has not yet been disclosed, but the airline indicated the landing was precautionary.
After two and a half hours on the ground in Bermuda, the aircraft resumed its flight, not to Jamaica, but to the second destination on its flight plan, Cancun, where it remained a little less than two hours before taking off to Montego Bay.
The aircraft arrived at the Jamaican airport at 06:30 UTC and took off again one and a half hour later for its return flight to Amsterdam Schiphol, where it landed at 16:08 UTC on 25 February with barely two and a half hours delay, a nice performance given the problems encountered en-route.
