TUI Airways flight TOM6422 from Cardiff, Wales, to Lanzarote (Boeing 737-800 registered G-TAWJ) triggered an international emergency response on Thursday, June 19, after a handwritten note claiming there was a bomb onboard was discovered mid-flight.
As the aircraft flew over Portuguese airspace, two Portuguese Air Force F-16 fighter jets were deployed to escort the plane. Although a diversion to Faro Airport was initially considered, the flight continued on its original course to César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport. Once it entered Spanish airspace, Spanish authorities took over.
Upon landing around 10:55, the aircraft was redirected to a secure area of the airport. All passengers disembarked safely. Spanish emergency teams, including Civil Guard bomb disposal experts (TEDAX) and other security units, thoroughly searched the aircraft and surrounding areas.
The incident led to the activation of the airport’s emergency plan, but the airport remained operational throughout. After extensive checks, no explosives were found, and the threat was confirmed to be a false alarm. An investigation is ongoing to identify those responsible for the hoax.
