The Romanian government is looking for approval by the European Commission to give state aid to flag carrier TAROM. The Romanian airline will close 2019 with a deficit of around €40 million.
Romania’s transport ministry said that it will apply for aid of €47 million from Brussels and a restructuring aid of around €110 million from the state budget in order to save the ailing company.
“Things look really bad for TAROM,” transport minister Lucian Bode said to Romanian tv channel B1TV, adding that “there is only €20 million left on the airline’s bank accounts.
According to Bode, the airline needs a well-defined restructuring programme: “TAROM didn’t ask for rescue aid in the past 10 years, hence we will ask for it and we have also discussed this in Brussels.“
