A TAP Air Portugal flight from Hamburg to Lisbon was forced to return shortly after takeoff on Monday after the crew reported a technical problem, subjecting 103 passengers to a tense two-hour delay in the air.
The Embraer 190 registered CS-TPO, operating as flight TAP561, departed Hamburg around 14:30, but had not yet reached cruising altitude when a cockpit alarm prompted the pilots to request a precautionary return. Because the aircraft was fully fuelled and overweight for landing, it spent nearly two hours circling between Bremervörde and Itzehoe to burn off fuel before attempting to land.
The first landing attempt was aborted, extending the holding pattern and heightening tension on board. Emergency services, including firefighters and paramedics, were deployed as a precaution, and local hospitals were placed on standby. Shortly after 16:00, the aircraft made a second approach and landed safely, with no injuries reported and no need for emergency intervention.
It remained unclear whether passengers would be able to continue to Lisbon later the same day. The incident occurred amid winter weather disruptions at Hamburg Airport, where snow and ice had already led to a small number of flight cancellations, although overall operations were reported to be largely stable.
